It's All About Us
I was talking to Joe and Greg last night about how strange it is to see people so passionately speaking for and against what you do for a living. If we were plumbers, there wouldn't be websites complaining that we only use PVC piping - lamenting for the days when we used only copper...

I'm with you, on some level, Steve. I'd never really banked on that part of being a Disney employee. One of the things that troubles me, even as someone who is looking to re-enter the very company that let me go, are the people who think that because you work / worked there, you're an official spokesperson. As much as I have no problem talking about Disney, because there's a lot about the company that I still love, I never get okay with people hearing that I work for Disney and deciding that is their cue to start a tyrade about the evil tyrany of Disney.
When my brother found out that I was laid off, recently, he called me and asked what I was going to do. I said, "Rick, I'm going to find a better fit with the company. I am not done with Disney." His response? "Those greedy assholes laid you OFF!!! How can you be loyal to them?" As if Disney is the only company that restructures and lays people off. To my mind, there may have been personal aspects involved in my being let go (which became startlingly possible as my DTS days drew to an end), but in the grand scheme of things this could have happened at ANY company in the current economic climate. The benefits of working for Disney still outweigh whatever other companies can offer me, based on my lifestyle and interests and passions. Is Rick the only one that reacted this way to my announcing that I would keep trying with Disney? Nope. Not at all.
Disney effects people in a very personal way, because the company taps into the child in people (mostly). That is a place in people's psyche where we are not totally rational, we're a little insecure, and the world is all about what we want, how we want it and when we want it. Interesting indeed.
